Carl Lewis to be Inducted into Houston Sports HOF

Lewis highlights Houston Sports HOF Class of 2020

HOUSTON – University of Houston track & field Assistant Coach, 10-time Olympic Medalist and Cougar great Carl Lewis will be inducted into the Houston Sports Hall of Fame, presented by PNC Bank.
 
Lewis is a member of the three-person class that includes two-time NBA Champion Rudy Tomjanovich and Olympic Gold medalist Mary Lou Retton. The class will be inducted into the Hall of Fame on Jan. 21 during the annual Houston Sports Awards hosted by the Harris County-Houston Sports Authority at the Hilton Americas – Downtown.
 
Known as one of the greatest athletes in the world, Lewis is the winner of nine Olympic Gold medals, 10 World Championships medals and hold three Houston program records. Lewis is a six-time NCAA National Champion, holding four titles in the long jump (1980 Indoor, 1980 Outdoor,1981 Indoor, 1981 Outdoor) along with titles in the 60-yards (1981) and 100-meter (1981).
 
After coming to Houston to run for former Head Coach Tom Tellez in 1979, Lewis sprung onto the national scene after qualifying for the 1980 Olympics in the long jump and 4x100-meter relay as a member of Team USA. In 1991, Lewis set the world record in the 100-meter dash and went onto break the 4x100-meter relay world record at the Barcelona Olympics alongside Houston Track & Field Head Coach Leroy Burrell.
 
The Cougar great has had unprecedented success as a nine-time Olympic Gold medalist, including four gold medals in a single event. Lewis's longevity is unmatched and in his final Olympic games in 1996, he won his fourth consecutive gold medal in the long jump.
 
Lewis is entering his sixth season as an Assistant Coach on the Houston Track & Field program and has helped the Cougars earn back-to-back third-place finishes at the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
